Straight or Straight-up Point Spread Bet: Mobile Sports Betting
This is a sports bet similar to the money line bet except it does take the point spread into consideration. This is an extremely popular sports bet among long time or professional sports betting enthusiasts. You are required to pick the team that you believe will win, but you must also give up (or receive) "points" depending on the odds. The results are the total amount of the score for the team you chose plus (or minus, if your team had a negative amount) the points shown. Straight Point Spread Bets are also listed in positive (underdog or long shot) and negative (favored to win or favorite) amounts. This type of mobile sports bet will most often pay $100 for each bet of $110.
A team with a-5 is favored to win. In order for you to win a straight bet, your team must win by more than 5 points over the competition. If your team has a +5, you can still win, as long as your team does not lose by more than 5 points. In the case of a team either winning or losing by exactly 5 points, you would not win or lose the bet. This is considered a "push", which is a tie and the original sports bet will be returned.
Sports Betting Information: It is very common for mobile sportsbooks to have point spreads set in numbers that are not even, but in amounts of a half (½) point. It would be seen like this: +5 ½ or -5 ½. This will prevent any ties or pushes from ever occurring, since the final score could not possibly be won (or lost) by this amount.
You may also come across competitions that are evenly matched and do not have a point spread amount. These are typically shown with a "PK" or PICK (sometimes referred to as "pick'em") displayed in place of the plus or minus amounts.
One other thing to note when placing straight bets is the fact that your team can actually win, but you could lose you bet and vice-versa. This can easily occur if the favorite wins the game, but does not "cover" the points. It can also happen if your team loses the competition, but does not lose by more than the points given. In the first case, you would not win on a straight bet; but in the second one, you would.
Buy (Buying) Points - You can increase your chances of winning, by buying points. Most mobile sportsbooks will allow you (for a price) to buy in increments of a half point (½) and the usual maximum is three (3) points. When you buy points, the line will change. An example would be if you bought ½ point the line would change from -110 to -120, meaning it would cost you $120 (in place of $110) to win $100. You will also find mobile sportsbooks that have additional fees added to buy points. Buying points is most often done in football and basketball. You will discover that most mobile sportsbooks permit point buying for straight bets, action reverse bets, and If bets. Make sure you check ahead for point buying procedures.
Example of a Point Spread Bet in Football:- Pittsburgh -14
- Dallas +14
In this example Pittsburgh is favored to win over Dallas by 14 points. If you want to bet on Pittsburgh (favorite), you will have to give up 14 points. You can do this by subtracting 14 from their final score, or by adding 14 to Dallas's final score. Pittsburgh has to win by more than 14 points.
Now, if you want to bet on Dallas (underdog), you will get 14 points added to their score, or as above; subtract 14 from Pittsburgh's total. You will win a bet on Dallas, as long as they do not lose by more than 14 points.
You can win either bet, as long as the point spread (14) is covered. In other words, as long as they win by more (or less, if this is how you bet it) than the 14-point spread amount. As previously stated, this type of sports bet pays $100 for every $110 bet. In this example, you would win a total of $210 (your original bet of $110 + $100 for a total payout of $210). We have used the amount of $100 in our examples, but Money Line Bets can be made for any amount of money.
Note: Since the only difference among the various sports you can place this type of bet on is the team name and points, all of the point spread bets would be figured as explained above. Simply figure the stated points (by either adding or subtracting) for the sport you are going to bet on. The amount of the bet and payout remains the same ($100 payout for each sports bet of $110).
Note: Point spread wagers are the most widespread type of bet in football and basketball.
